Camryn Rogers has qualified for the Olympic hammer throw final after just one attempt

After just one throw, Richmond’s star athlete Camryn Rogers is on her way to an Olympic final.

Hammer thrower Rogers didn’t even need to match her personal best Saturday evening (Pacific time) at the Tokyo Games to qualify, finishing an impressive fourth out of 30 competitors with a reach of 73.97 metres.

She will now proceed straight to the final, scheduled for around 4:30 a.m. (Pacific) on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

The Richmond News told last week how Rogers’ mom, Shari, was hosting a watch party at a local gym on Saturday evening to take in her daughter’s Olympic debut.

Shari told the News that Camryn, an NCAA champ for the Cal Berkeley Bears and Kajaks Track and Field Club alumnus, was having the time of her life and is pumped up and ready to give it her all in her Olympic debut.

And that was clearly evident on Saturday evening as Camryn stepped into the hammer-throwing net with an icy glare before her qualifying throw.

If she throws something close to her personal best she has a realistic chance of achieving the unthinkable – a place on the Olympic podium.
