Marek Pipes leads an impressive group of rookie goalies in the PJHL this season.

The year of the rookie goalies continues to be one of the bigger developments in the Pacific Junior Hockey League this season and it’s the Richmond Sockeyes own Marek Pipes leading the way.
The Vancouver Island native, who celebrated his 18th birthday last month, recorded his league-leading fourth shutout of the season in Richmond’s 2-0 road victory over Tom Shaw Conference frontrunners Grandview Steelers on Sunday afternoon. Pipes, who played in the Canadian School Sports Hockey League for Shawnigan League a year ago, also leads the PJHL in goals against average (1.98) and save percentage .938, while improving his season record to 11-6-0.
Pipes out duelled Steelers freshman stopper Matteo Paler-Chow, 17, who made his 19th start of the season.
The former B.C. Major Midget Hockey League product with the Greater Vancouver Canadians ranks fifth in the league in average (2.38) and save percentage (.917).
The Sockeyes solved Paler-Chow on second period goals from Brodie Crawford and Lucas Stratford.
It was Crawford’s team-leading 16th of the season as Richmond (13-8-1-4) pulled within five points of the Steelers.
Three nights earlier at Minoru Arenas, Pipes came out on the short end of another rookie netminder battle as 16-year-old Jordan Naylor turned aside 24 shots to lead the Delta Ice Hawks to a 2-1 victory.
The visitors broke the deadlock on Alex Suprynowicz’s goal with just 32 seconds remaining. Crawford scored for Richmond.
Richmond will be back home next Thursday to take on North Vancouver at 7 p.m.
