Moushtak Estepho has joined Matt Pitcairn and Jonathan Ho as the three Richmond Community Coalition school trustee candidates for the Richmond Board of Education.

Estepho announced his candidacy at Minoru Park Wednesday and noted in a news release he will be mindful of special needs students as well as an “innovative and relevant learning environment” for future students, including his three-month-old daughter.

Estepho identified as a Christian who emigrated from Iraq as a refugee in 1994 when he was 16-years-old. He graduated from the public education system along with his six siblings.

Estepho, now 36, said recognizing different opinions and Richmond’s diversity is important to him.

“Basically I want to bring up different viewpoints into public education. What I felt — and it wasn’t like one side was wrong or the other — it was just a common understanding of where everyone stands, so the basic philosophies: trying to put yourself in the other person’s shoes to understand where they’re coming from to come to a solution that’s agreeable to everybody,” said Estepho, during his brief announcement.

The RCC now has three trustee candidates and six council candidates for the Nov. 15 municipal election.
