The Ikea store in Richmond, B.C. is hosting a summer-long back-to-school essential drive for local students.

Richmond's Ikea is working with the Richmond Food Bank to ensure students head back to school this fall with essential items like lunch bags, reusable food containers and water bottles.

For every "Back to School" item donated at Ikea Richmond, the store will match with similar products up to a maximum of $5,000 in retail value from July 7 to Aug. 10.

"We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive at school, and that starts with being well-fed and well-prepared," said Ikea Richmond spokesperson Maria Valley.

"By working together with the Richmond Food Bank, we're helping families stretch their budgets further while supporting children's health and education."

There will also be a drop-off location for non-perishable food items such as canned protein, vegetables, rice and pasta.

According to the Richmond Food Bank, 18 per cent of their clients are school-aged children.

The added burden of back-to-school expenses can be overwhelming as well, stated Ikea Richmond.

Hajira Hussain, executive director of the Richmond Food Bank, said they are seeing more families turning to them for help.

"With school-aged children making up nearly one-fifth of our clients, this initiative couldn't come at a better time," said Hussain.

"We're grateful to Ikea Richmond for stepping up to support our community in such a meaningful way."

Donations are being accepted at Ikea Richmond, located at 3320 Jacombs Rd., during store opening hours.
