Ever consider a career in the hotel industry? If so, Richmond Continuing Education has a free information evening (Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.) at Richmond Secondary school for its Hotel Guest Services, Front Office course. The course is designed to introduce students to all aspects of front office operations within a hotel/motel. The course runs Thursdays, Oct. 2 to Dec. 18 from 7-9:30 p.m.

The $343 course fee includes $95 for a textbook.

Discover the magic of pysanky: Learn to make your own Ukrainian decorated eggs and explore the studio and gallery of pysanky expert and best-selling author Joan Brander.

Dance classes for children: Pre-register your child for one of several age-appropriate creative movement class at Gabriela’s Movement Studio. Tourism Richmond pie contest: Cheer on competitors from Richmond hotels, restaurants, bakeries, caterers and ice creams shops as they compete to take home the coveted pie plate trophies.

Writer-in-residence Mark Leiren-Young at the Richmond Cultural Centre: Meet Richmond’s 2014 Writer-in-Residence, MarkLeiren-Young. Enjoy short readings, hear about his writing career and learn about the range of free public programs he will present during his two months in residency at the Richmond Public Library, Richmond Media Lab and Minoru Place Activity Centre.

Fraser River Recollections at Britannia Shipyards: Join John Horton, 35-year Search and Lifeboat Commander and world renowned member of the Royal Marine Artists, for a presentation of his art and storytelling about the south arm of the Fraser River.

Lulu Sweet: A Gold Rush Take in 8 Acts: Using an iPhone, take a walking tour along the Richmond Olympic Oval waterfront and imagine the life of Gold Rush actor Lulu Sweet, for whom Lulu Island was named.

Resident art group showcase at the Richmond Culture Centre: Experience some of the best of Richmond’s arts and crafts in a vibrant showcase of work and demonstrations by the Richmond Art Centre’s resident art groups.

Messing around with art at the Thompson Community Centre: Presented by the Community Arts Council of Richmond, bring the whole family and enjoy all types of hands-on art activities such as playing with clay, making a mask, beading a bracelet and more.

Other activities in Richmond during the three-day festival include a veggie printing workshop, demonstration of Chinese Folk Dance, a tap dance class, open artist studios and many more.

There will be special tours at the Gateway Theatre, Richmond Cultural Centre, Historic Steveston, Richmond Museum’s artifact storage facility and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. The Richmond Cultural Centre will be a major hub for Culture Days: Brighouse Library, Richmond Museum, Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond Media Lab, Richmond Arts Centre Studios, Performance Hall and Rooftop Garden are all participating venues.

As part of Cultural Days at the Richmond Cultural Centre, come explore some art and have some fun at the Creative Art Station. Everyone three and older years is invited to this free, drop-in activity at the Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate) from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. Pick up a brush, pencil and paint and be part of this hands-on drawing and painting workshop. An art exhibition of Cathy Kluthe and WanLi’s recent works in acrylic and multi-mediums is on display. Disability access is available. Hailed from Hong Kong, Rosanne Lui has made a name for herself as a singer and an actress. If you missed her performance the last time she was in Vancouver, you can catch her live at the River Rock Show Theatre (8811 River Road) at 8 p.m. on Sept. 29. This energetic Cantopop concert is surely not to be missed. Tickets range from $68 to $168 plus service charges

 The Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, which helps raise funds for hospital equipment, seniors and patients in our community, is looking for volunteers for a variety of positions. Want to see your photos come to life in 3D?

You might just if you submit images of Richmond to the Richmond Public Library’s Your City in 3D. Images being sought are of historical buildings, statues, wildlife, boats, etc., or farm, airport and harbour scenes, plus any other representations of Richmond’s rich cultural heritage. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 3. Those images selected will help to build a series of interconnected panels that are 3D printed. Mobility an issue, but you want a few ways to burn off some calories? The open gym accessible sports is back Mondays (except school holidays), starting Sept. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cook Road elementary school (8600 Cook Rd.) This is an inclusive, friendly, non-competitive environment where function, fitness and confidence are the goals with activities including speedminton, sitting volleyball, obstacle courses, and more. First, the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, which helps raise funds for hospital equipment, patients and seniors in our community, is looking for volunteers for a variety of three to four-hour shifts. Experience with retail sales/cash an asset. Second, the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Lottery Booth, which helps raise funds for hospital equipment, patients and seniors in our community, is looking for volunteers for a variety of shifts.
