Volunteers needed to count birds in Richmond

On Saturday, Dec. 14, park goers might spot people with binoculars, paper and pen in-hand, staring into the sky.

That’s the day Bird Studies Canada has scheduled for its annual Christmas Bird Count, coordinated locally by Nature Vancouver.

At last year’s Christmas count in the Vancouver circle, which Iona Regional Park and north Richmond belong to, 121 species were spotted. This was down from 133 species in 2010.

Richmond is split between two 24-kilometre-radius areas, Ladner and Vancouver.

So far, organizers say enough volunteers have signed up for the Sea Island/YVR area, but volunteers are needed for other areas in Richmond.

The count takes place from sunrise to sunset and volunteers need to bring along binoculars. Birders of all levels can take part in the bird count.

The day-long event will be followed by a dinner at the Unitarian Church in Vancouver.
