Hot weather may not necessarily translate into early harvest just yet

The farming duo Kimi Hendess and Kareno Hawbolt, of Sweet Digz Farm, is gearing up for another busy growing season.

Sweet Digz will open its market kiosk at the end of No. 2 Road on May 28 or June 3, depending on weather conditions affecting the No. 2 Road organic farm.

Thereafter, every Saturday Sweet Digz will set up a kiosk at True Conditioning fitness centre at London Landing where fresh, organic vegetables will be available every week. Seasonal flowers and fruit from the Interior will be available in the summer months.

Hendess said despite the unseasonably warm and sunny weather, conditions can change quickly, especially in May.

“It’s hot. But it doesn’t translate into an early start to the market because if you plant now and it gets cold at night it could all just die,” she said.

If it’s another hot and dry season such as last year, Hendess said expect bumper crops of peppers and tomatoes.

Sweet Digz is already sold out of its weekly organic vegetable deliveries for the season. In order to support the seasonal start-up costs, you can purchase a pre-paid Sweet Digz card and apply the value at each weekly market. For more information see SweetDigzFarm.Wordpress.com.
