There are moments when a parent’s heartfelt insight becomes one’s guiding compass for life: “When you have more than you need to live a good life, you should give back — because no matter how tightly you grasp your gold coins, you can’t take them with you.”

These are the words James Dy still holds close to his heart — words from his father that have quietly shaped a legacy of generosity, compassion and community care.

Together with his wife, Grace, James has spent years giving back to uplift others through a deep commitment to health care in Richmond. Their giving is not about recognition, but about care — for this community, for the people who live here and for the belief that everyone deserves access to health care, regardless of their background.

This June, James and Grace Dy were honoured with the 2025 Community Cares Award by Richmond Hospital Foundation, a celebration of those who bring people together and strengthen the health system through acts of kindness and generosity. The award was presented at the Community Cares Celebration at the Richmond Country Club, an evening that brought together champions of care from all walks of life.

The Dys have quietly supported Richmond Hospital through the years, helping fund vital diagnostic and surgical equipment for patients with cancer, cardiac issues and orthopedic needs. Their generous gift toward the new Yurkovich Family Pavilion, Richmond Hospital’s future acute care tower, further reflects their belief that the very best care should be available close to home, both now and into the future.

“James and Grace Dy have been prioritizing health care in Richmond for many years,” shares Spencer Gall, chief philanthropy officer at Richmond Hospital Foundation. “Their leadership has amplified access to care, creating lasting impact not just within the hospital walls, but throughout the entire community.”

But perhaps most powerful is the way James and Grace lead by example. As matching donors, they’ve doubled the impact of community contributions — not only providing resources, but inspiring others to give with their hearts, too.

Their example is a reminder that generosity is more than a single act. It’s a lifelong practice, built on values passed down through generations and that when we lift others, we all rise.

The Community Cares Celebration itself is made successful through the support of leaders like RCG Group, a long-standing sponsor and champion for health care in Richmond. Their ongoing partnership reflects the strength of Richmond’s community spirit – one that rallies together in times of need and hope.

“At Richmond Hospital Foundation, it’s our privilege to witness the generosity in this community and how people come together to support one another and drive meaningful change,” Gall says. “Donor support helps uplift both the health care team and the families they care for, making a meaningful difference to the lives of so many people.”
