The seventh annual Rose’s Angels event took place in Richmond on Sunday, with more than 1,000 care packages assembled for vulnerable people in the community.
Rose’s Angels, under the umbrella of the Kehila Society of Richmond, was boosted by a small army of 80 volunteers who came together at the Richmond Jewish Day School.
The packages and several hundred warmth bundles which will be delivered this week to the event’s partner agencies, according to co-organizer Courtney Cohen.
“This being our seventh year, Lynne Fader and myself wanted to make sure that agencies asked their clients what items they would like to receive their care packages. We tailored the items inside to meet the needs of the receiving recipients,” explained Cohen.
A total of 24 not-for-profit agencies are benefiting from Rose’s Angels’ care packages this month.
Agencies include: Richmond Family Place, Chimo Community Services, Jewish Family service agency, Richmond Food Bank, Richmond Centre for Disability, Heart is Richmond AIDS Society, Raincity Housing, Richmond Multicultural Community Services and Gilmore Park Church.
Items in the packages included toiletries, feminine hygiene products, books, note pads, arts and craft supplies, non-perishable food items, socks, gloves and scarves.
“People want to volunteer in their community and sometimes they don’t have the resources or connections that allow them to carry out their desire to give back,” said Cohen, of the event which was founded by her Fader in 2013 in memory of Cohen’s grandmother Rose Lewin, who was a holocaust survivor.
“Rose’s Angels has grown into a strong pillar event in our community and it’s wonderful to see volunteers of all ages coming together to care packages for those who they will never meet. It’s inspirational.
“This event would not be possible if it wasn’t for our incredible donors and volunteers who allow this event to be successful year after year.”
The Beauty for Babs component donates feminine hygiene and makeup products to those most vulnerable in our community.
