The 37th annual Terry Fox Run takes place at Garry Point Park this Sunday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.

According to Howard Jampolsky — organizer of the Richmond run — more people are set to turn out than in previous years, raising more money for cancer research in the process.

Around 400 people took to the West Dyke last year to walk and/or run the 1K, 2K or 10K, with millions of dollars raised across Canada (almost $20,000 in Richmond) for the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).

“One thing people should note is that the money we raise for the TFRI is translated into tangible gains in treatments that have improved the lives and extended the lives of Canadians,” Jampolsky told the Richmond News.

Once more, donations are welcome at Sunday morning’s 9 a.m. registration, but “not necessary,” Jampolsky added.

“Some people come with pledges; but everyone and anyone is very welcome.”

Jampolsky said that, although the event has a healthy number of volunteers signed up, they “could always do with more help.”

“If someone is willing and interested, there is always something that needs to be done,” he said.

“Get in touch with us beforehand or just come along on the day.”

And while some may think it’s getting harder each year to rally people around the cause, Jampolsky said he believes it’s actually getting easier. “Every year, we learn something new and apply it the following year,” he said.

“And we’re raising more money each year, which is obviously great.

“The Terry Fox Run wouldn’t happen each year in Richmond without our residents’ commitment to continue Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer.”

The annual Terry Fox Run is taking place Sunday in more than 800 communities nation-wide.
