The City of Richmond has approved what it calls a "groundbreaking" new Social Development Strategy, created to guide community social programs and policy for the next decade.

Nine specific "directions" have been formed as part of the strategy:

1. Expand housing choices.

2. Enhance community accessibility.

3. Address needs of an aging population.

4. Help Richmond's children, youth and families to thrive.

5. Build on Richmond's cultural diversity.

6. Support community engagement and volunteerism.

7. Strengthen Richmond's social infrastructure.

8. Provide high quality recreation, arts, cultural and wellness opportunities.

9. Facilitate strong and safe neighbourhoods.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said the city needs to be sure it's addressing social issues faced by the community if it wants to achieve its goal of being a sustainable city.

As part of the strategy, the city will focus on three primary goals; enhance social equity and inclusion; engage citizens and build on social assets and community capacity. Visit www.richmond.ca/socialplan for a copy.
