Richmond kid Amina Jia Yu Ma isn’t your typical nine-year-old girl.

In fact, she’s actually studying three years above her grade level.

And, because of her academic accomplishments, was invited to the 2nd Annual Kumon Student Conference in Calgary last week.

Just 56 children from more than 400,000 Kumon students in the United States, Canada and Mexico were selected for the all-expense paid trip.

The invited students are all studying at least three years above their grade level in math and/or reading at their respective Kumon Centres.

Kumon is an after-school math and reading enrichment program that claims to unlock the potential of children, so they can achieve more on their own.

Attendees at the conference had the opportunity to learn from each other through a variety of activities designed to foster team building, group discussion, critical thinking and creativity.

“The beauty of Kumon is that it’s a learning program based on ability rather than age or grade, which allows our students the opportunity to study above their school grade level,” said Sung Park, vice president of materials development and instruction at Kumon North America.

“Kumon strives to cultivate confident and independent students who become life-long learners. With this conference, we are able to celebrate our students’ accomplishments and inspire them to continue on to program completion.”

Founded in 1958, Kumon celebrates its 60th year serving children worldwide. Kumon has more than four million students enrolled in nearly 25,000 learning centres in 50 countries and regions.
