Eleven Richmond High School grads from the class of ’49 got together recently for the 70th anniversary of their graduation.

Eleven of the surviving members of the 64-strong class made it to the Maples Residences in Steveston for the party.

The high school, the only one in Richmond at the time, was on the corner of Sexsmith and Cambie roads and when the class of ’49 were in Grade 7, there were about 200 students.

In those days, you could quit school at 15, and many did because families needed the money from their kids working.

Apparently, just three students from that year went on to university, although others followed later.
