The Richmond Youth Honour Choir (RYHC) is hosting its 11th annual Voices In Peace concert; a free, family-friendly event produced with the spirit of “pay it forward” for peace.

The vision for the concert, to be held Nov. 10 at Fraserview Community Church, comes from the RYHC’s artistic director, Heidi Epp.

“If the purpose of Remembrance Day is to remember so we never come to this place of war again, it’s not working. It is important to remember the tragedies and losses of war, the suffering of many including veterans, their families, civilians and, well, everyone,” said Epp.

“But, perhaps we also need to remember what alternatives to war might look like,” she added. To this end, the concert includes stories of people who have worked towards peace during conflict.

As well, the artists and venues are donating their talents and spaces in the hopes that audience members will be inspired to “pay forward” and make efforts towards peace in their homes, neighborhoods, places of work — and the world.

This year, the event includes all three RYHC choirs, the Vancouver Peace Choir under the direction of acclaimed composer and conductor, Timothy Corlis, plus award winning violinist, Gabriella Epp, and symphonic composer, Bruno Cavalca.

There will also be a 10,000 Villages kiosk featuring Fair Trade holiday season merchandise.

The RYHC choir recently represented Richmond and B.C. in Ottawa for Canada 150 celebrations on July 1. Next July, they will be representing Richmond and Canada in South Africa at the World Choir Games.
