Richmond grandmother has launched an online auction to raise funds for Diefenbaker elementary’s new playground.
The school planned to replace the existing, decades-old playground four years ago, but it was put on hold due to a lack of funds — despite the school’s constant efforts to fundraise.
“I sensed the disappointment,” said Luella Cook, whose two grandchildren attend the school.
She then volunteered to organize an online auction to provide one more novel fundraising option for the project.
“Families are very busy. I thought an online auction could make it easier for them to get involved and make donations.”
She was helped in setting up the online auction through the charity eFlea.
Cook and a group of parents and grandparents from the school community have reached out to hundreds of local business owners, merchants and individuals, asking for items or services that could be donated to the auction.
She also wrote to celebrities such as astronaut Chris Hadfield, who donated his autographed books, and Charlotte Diamond, who mailed Cook a box of her publications shortly after being contacted.
“The community has been incredibly supportive. Their generosity is humbling,” said Cook.
Adding to the generosity is Rick Ilich, the president of Townline Homes, who agreed to match all money earned through the auction as well as any cash donations.
“They said there was no limit for this donation…His kindness has motivated me to raise more,” Cook said.
Now the auction site has around 180 items, from stays in Hawaii, local restaurant meals and movie nights to community activities, books, toys and home products.
“Just take a look at the website and you will find something you need. Most importantly, by doing that you are supporting our kids and community,” said Cook.
She hopes this auction will add at least $30,000 to the previous funds raised by the school, ending the long wait for a new playground.
“The playground creates a sense of bonding and is the heart of a community. It’s important to make sure our kids play on safe facilities,” said Cook.
The auction will be live from Oct. 6-21 at DiefenbakerElementary2017.Eflea.ca/. Cash donations can also be made to [email protected].
