Strap on your dancing shoes, Richmond! Dancers young and old are invited to celebrate the International Day of Dance with free events in the city.

Start your dance-filled weekend with a free ballet barre class at the Richmond Arts Centre on Friday, April 27. Grande Plié has become an annual favourite event, led by dance instructor Miyouki Jego. The 30-minute class, which runs from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. highlights the physical aspects of dance and also demonstrates the role the arts play in strengthening communities.

Right after the barre class, head on over to the festivities at Aberdeen Centre hosted by Sudnya Dance Academy and Clarkson Events, who have held International Day of Dance events in Richmond since 2015. For its fourth annual celebration, the two organizations are hosting free workshops where the community is invited to learn four diverse dance styles on Friday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sudnya Dance Academy and Clarkson Events are also hosting a free, multicultural performance at Aberdeen Centre.

The International Day of Dance actually falls on April 29 and is a celebration of Jean-Georges Noverre (1717-1810) who created modern ballet. The day of celebration was established in 1982 by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner.
