Richmond youth interested in developing leadership skills can now apply for the Youth Now Leadership Program.
Now in its 15th year, Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives runs the program with funding from Coast Capital Savings and the Government of Canada’s Canada Service Corps to help youth aged 18 to 25 develop leadership skills.
“Youth are an underutilized community resource,” said Jocelyn Wong, general manager of RCRG in a press release. “This program seeks to rectify that, by elevating youth to leadership positions, and supporting them so they can contribute in a meaningful way.”
During their yearlong term of the program, youth serve on a local non-profit’s board of directors where they are mentored by an experienced board member.
“Youth Now has given me the knowledge, experience, and confidence to truly understand the difference I can make in our community as a youth citizen,” said Gurleen Aujla, a 2018-19 Youth Now graduate who served on the board of the Richmond Food Bank.
Over 120 young leaders have completed the program over the past 14 years.
“Above all, Youth Now is about preparing young adults to become the next generation of community leaders,” Wong said. “But it’s also about helping them grow as individuals, and providing them with the skills and tools to excel academically, professionally, and personally.”
