Richmond youth looking to make a difference in their community are encouraged to check out the fourth Youth Volunteer Fair hosted by Charity Brighouse next week.

On April 11 as part of National Volunteer Week, over 20 organizations will gather at the library’s Brighouse Branch with information on various volunteer opportunities geared towards youth. For 17-year-old Richmond Christian School student Caris Tin, the fair is a helpful way for youth to see what opportunities are out there.

“I do realize that a lot of organizations are lacking volunteers,” Tin, who is also president of Charity Brighouse, told the Richmond News, adding that the event aims to “provide an avenue for teens to find out what is available to them.”

In past years, the event has attracted up to 800 youth with organizations such as Red Cross, Richmond Cares Richmond Gives, Canadian Liver Foundation and Young Investors Program in attendance.

Between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m., youth can expect to mingle with various organizations, learn about volunteer opportunities and attend workshops on the benefits of volunteering and how to be a successful volunteer.

Tin encourages her peers thinking of attending the fair to be ambitious, take new opportunities and try new things.

“It’s important because we can create changes in your community as we’re all a part of the same community,” she said.

“We’re just a living breathing community who need to support each other and as youth we can have a voice and we should have a voice to help create the community we want to live in when we grow older.”
