Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap replied to a request from the Richmond News to comment on his personal dealings with lobbyists who allegedly flouted the Elections Act by misrepresenting the true source of their campaign donations to the BC Liberal party.

“I am focusing on working hard for my constituents and talking with them about the upcoming election, including conversations at their doorsteps,” Yap told the News via Twitter.

“I know the BC Liberal Party is reviewing the issues raised by the Globe and Mail, as they (the party) are responsible for recording and receipt of donations for all ridings.”

Yap deferred questions on the subject to the BC Liberal communications department.

The Globe and Mail reported this month that some lobbyists were found to have made campaign donations in their name and then got personally reimbursed by their companies.

Concurrently, there are calls from the BC NDP and Green Party to ban corporate and union donations amidst much criticism of “cash for access” deals between donors and lawmakers.

The BC Liberals reportedly stated this week that the government cannot reform campaign finance laws prior to the May 9 election. In B.C., there are few limits on campaign donations and foreigners may also contribute.

Thursday was the last sitting of the Legislature before the election.
