Lane closures scheduled for Steveston and Gilbert intersection on Thursday

Sewer line work is on-going along Gilbert Road to increase capacity.

Sewer line work at the intersection of Steveston Highway and Gilbert Road will result in lane closures on Thursday (Feb. 29).

Metro Vancouver is advising drivers to take an alternative route.

The work is being done by Metro Vancouver whereby they are laying a second sewer pipe alongside the current one.

The Gilbert Road sewer collects most of the sewage from Richmond and sends it to the Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.

So far, the sewer replacement project has been advancing from the north end of Gilbert moving south and will eventually end at Dyke Road where the wastewater treatment plant is located.

Metro Vancouver notes that the current single sewer pipe is at “full capacity” and that makes regular inspections and maintenance “costly and highly disruptive to the community.”
