It was a trip somewhat close to home that produced the first goal of Dakota Chan’s NCAA soccer career.
The Richmond standout scored in the Nebraska Cornhuskers 2-1 win over Long Beach State on Friday night — part of a two-game road trip to Southern California for the Big 10 Conference School.
With her team trailing in the 65th minute, the sophomore midfielder took a pass from Olivia Brown then beat a defender before firing a shot home. The Cornhuskers would add the game winner less than 10-minutes later after outshooting Long Beach State 19-6.
The trip concluded Sunday with a 2-0 loss to USC. Nebraska returns home to host Oklahoma on Friday.
Chan has started all five games this season. The McMath graduate came through the Total Soccer Systems’ (TSS) U18 program. She was MVP for Canada at this year’s Nations Cup back in July.
The Nebraska roster also features junior Natalie Cooke — another TSS product who graduated from Richmond High.
At the U Sports level, Amelia Crawford set-up Sophie Damian in the 87th minute as the UBC Thunderbirds salvaged a 1-1 draw with University of Fraser Valley.
Crawford, a fifth-year forward from Hugh Boyd, has started all four games for the Thunderbirds.
The UBC roster also features Jacqueline Tyrer. The freshman defender and McRoberts grad has already made two starts, including Saturday’s match. She closed out her youth career in June by helping Surrey United win the U18 Provincial Premier Cup.
