Richmond clubs win titles at Bball Nationals

MacHoops and Shooting Stars have memorable runs at the Langley Events Centre

It was a big weekend for MacHoops and Shooting Stars at the 2019 BBall Nationals Boys Tournament held at the Langley Events Centre.

The Richmond-based programs captured the U18 All-Star and U16 Elite titles respectively on Monday.

MacHoops capped their run with a 68-50 win over Northern Bounce 17 Red.

An early 14-point run was more than enough of a cushion as MacHoops led nearly wire-to-wire.

The game was a rematch of round-robin play on Sunday, when Northern Bounce wrapped up first place with a 5-0 record thanks to a 51-50 victory.

Usman Tung earned the game MVP award with a 21-point effort while Hudson Swaim had 10 points.

Tung and Swaim were coming off outstanding high school seasons with the MacNeill Ravens that resulted in a fourth place finish at provincials.

Meanwhile, McMath standouts Jonathan Downton and Travis Hamberger had a large say in the Shooting Stars 82-65 win over Newfoundland’s Rock Elite.

The Shooting Stars were up 37-31 at halftime and blew the game wide-open thanks to a 33-9 barrage and coasted to the 17-point victory.

Hamberger scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half while Downton had 19 points on his way to securing tournament MVP honours.

This was the second year the event was held at LEC with the field increasing from 52 teams in 2018 to 67 in 2019. The teams were competing in three divisions – U14, U16 and U18 – with an Elite Division and All-Star Division champion in each.
