Ravens and Colts off to Grade 9 Provincials

Respective city champions qualify at South Fraser playoffs

City champion MacNeill Ravens finished second to host South Delta at the South Fraser Grade 9 Championships. They head to Heritage Woods in Port Moody this week for provincials.

A pair of Richmond teams are headed to this week’s BC Grade 9 Invitational Basketball Championships.

The MacNeill Ravens are headed to the girls tourney at Heritage Woods Secondary in Port Moody thanks to their second place finish at the inaugural South Fraser Grade 9 Championships atg South Delta Secondary.

The Richmond champions defeated Earl Marriott 57-36 in the semi-finals to lock up a BC berth before falling 64-35 to the host Sun Devils in Thursday’s title game.

They were nearly joined by the Burnett Breakers who were edged 44-37 by Marriott in the third place game. The Richmond runners-up opened the tourney with a 33-29 win over McNair before falling 57-29 to South Delta.

Meanwhile, the Richmond Colts are headed to the boys provincial tourney at Burnaby South Secondary after their third place finish at the South Fraser playoffs.

The Colts were edged 56-47 by eventual champion North Delta in the semi-finals then rebounded to defeat North Surrey 43-20.

The Richmond champions got past Guildford Park 68-60 in their opener. City runner-up McRoberts bowed out after losses to North Delta (87-40) and Guildford (68-49).
