Letters: Contaminated drug supply is a crisis in B.C., Richmond

Letter writer wonders if she developed a drug problem, would she be welcomed in the community.

Richmond council chambers were packed on Monday as community members expressed their opinions on a proposal to have a safe-consumption site in Richmond.

Open letter to Mayor and Council:

Re: "Raucous Richmond meeting ends in vote to explore safe consumption site"

Health care is, I believe, a provincial matter so I am not sure why people are petitioning the city regarding the establishment of a safe injection site.

Nevertheless I felt that I should lend my voice to those in support of a safe-injection site for our community.

The contaminated drug supply is a crisis affecting all communities in B.C. and Richmond is no exception.

We need and should be welcoming solutions to protect our vulnerable residents who are struggling with addiction.

I’ve had cancer and was grateful that I could be cared for in Richmond.

If I developed a substance-abuse issue, I’d hate to think I wasn’t welcome in the community.
