Letters: Tax dollars should not be spent on new Richmond safe-consumption site

A Richmond News reader thinks implementing a safe drug consumption site will negatively impact younger generations

Richmond City Council recently voted in favour to explore a safe-consumption site at Richmond Hospital.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Residents protest proposed safe-consumption site in Richmond" and "Richmond council votes 8-1 to explore safe drug consumption site"

I’m just one of the residents of this community who emigrated from Hong Kong and have settled here since 1994. I love this friendly neighbourhood and the helping hands who reach out whenever needed.

However, while the development of Canada Line has no doubt improved the commute between Greater Vancouver areas, it seems that crime is increasing as well.

Let’s not talk about the political issues. The safe-consumption site next to the Richmond Hospital is not a solution to the problem. People need to be helped through treatment and getting rid of drugs. They’re not willing to work or try to work.

Our tax dollars should not be spent on this.

Once the safe-consumption site is established, it will attract more drug addicts to Richmond. These are badly affecting our younger generation and Chinatown is a perfect example.

I was one of the voters to vote for Heed, but his proposal is ruining our trust in him. If there are any petitions concerning this issue, I will eagerly respond and help spread awareness to our community.
