Update: Richmond Mounties recover stolen items from River Road property

A large cache of stolen items was found on a rural Richmond property after the city launched an investigation into illegal dumping.

A large cache of stolen items was found on a rural Richmond property after the city launched an investigation into illegal dumping.

Bylaws officers had asked Richmond RCMP to accompany them on an inspection of the property, said Clay Adams, the city’s spokesperson.

“The City had noticed evidence of illegal dumping and soil deposition without a permit, so we went to inspect,” said Adams.

“We do such inspections all the time but because this property was so well-concealed, (we) asked that the RCMP join us to ensure that there were no safety concerns.”

The property, in the 18,000 block of River Road, has a hidden driveway and is full of overgrown bushes. A metal structure, resembling a small hut, is visible from the driveway, as well as scattered debris.

After arriving at the property on Aug. 8, RCMP noticed a number of suspicious items, said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, the Richmond Mounties spokesperson.

“Officers noticed multiple suspicious items, including but not limited to vehicles, water craft, trailers, tools, wiring and gas cylinders,” said Hwang.

“Through the course of the investigation, officers determined that much of the property was stolen.”

Hwang added that it will take some time for the Mounties to catalogue all of the items, given their vast quantity, and that the Property Crime unit is actively investigating.
