Richmond’s Blundell Centre was closed Sunday while emergency crews responded to a natural gas leak.

Grace Pickell, a spokesperson for Fortis BC, said the natural gas provider first became aware of the gas odour coming from the plaza at No 2 and Blundell Roads around 11 a.m. Crews arrived on scene and worked with emergency responders to evacuate the area and close down the parking lot.

Gas lines to the plaza were shut off while Fortis BC worked to determine where the leak was coming from and what caused it.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we work to resolve the situation,” Pickell told the Richmond News.

Heather Kitchen, a Richmond resident, drove to Blundell Centre but couldn’t get into the store she wanted to get to because of the commotion.

“A bunch of people were sitting around in front of a medical building watching what was happening [when] I left,” she told the Richmond News.

Richmond Fire confirmed crews were on scene, but did not provide more information.
