Newly crowned Richmond senior volleyball champions McRoberts Strikers and McMath Wildcats will be looking for further success at their respective Lower Mainland Championships this week.
The Strikers continued their dominance in the Richmond Senior Boys League by capping a perfect run with a win over McMath in last Thursday’s championship game. McRoberts have been ranked among the top “AA” teams in the province all season and will be favoured to win the Lower Mainland tourney on their home court. The final is slated for Thursday night. The Richmond Colts are also competing in this event.
The Wildcats will move on to the Lower Mainland “AAA” Championships where they are joined by Steveston-London.
The Richmond Christian Eagles have already won their zone playoffs and will be heading to Terrace later this month for the Provincial “A” Championships.
Meanwhile, the Richmond Senior Girls Playoffs didn’t unfold as expected after defending champion and unbeaten McRoberts were knocked off by the McNair Marlins in a five-set thriller.
Both teams will move on to this week’s Lower Mainland “AAA” playdowns at Little Flower Academy.
The Marlins went on to reach the city final for the first time in recent memory before falling 3-0 to host McMath. The Wildcats will take their momentum to the Lower Mainland “AAAA” playoffs being hosted by Lord Byng. Steveston-London had a chance to join them if they could win a wild card game slated for Tuesday.
Third place finisher McNeill, along with Cambie and Palmer, are all competing at the Lower Mainland “AA” playdowns, while Richmond Christian is at the Mainland “A” playdowns. The Eagles were fourth in the city playoffs.
At the younger age levels, city champion Richmond Christian is hosting the Vancouver and District Junior Boys Championships, starting Thursday. They are joined by runner-up Cambie.
McMath is the site of the Bantam Girls V&D Championships. The Wildcats will be competing, along with Richmond champion McRoberts and third place finisher Steveston-London.
Richmond Junior Girls champion Steveston-London heads to Moscrop for the V&D playdowns and is joined by runner-up Richmond Christian. McRoberts is contending for a wildcard spot.
