Steveston-London's Fardaw Aimaq's outstanding play got the attention of Basketball Canada and an invite to the U17 national team selection camp

Steveston-London Sharks basketball standout Fardaws Aimaq is among 22 players attending a U17 national team tryout camp which wraps up on Friday in Toronto.
The camp will determine Canada’s 12-player roster for the 2016 U17 FIBA World Championships in Zaragoza, Spain from June 23- July 3. The national team will also be participating at an exhibition tournament in France prior to the championships.
“We’re excited to bring this young group together. Last summer we had our best ever finish at this age-level and we look forward to seeing their development and representing Canada on the world stage,” said Dave DeAveiro, head coach.
DeAveiro (McGill University) is be joined by assistants Michael Meeks (Canada Basketball), James Derouin (University of Ottawa) and apprentice coach, Nicky Davis (Sheridan College).
Aimaq enjoyed an outstanding Grade 11 season with the Sharks — helping the school win its first-ever Richmond and Lower Mainland AAA championships before dropping a heartbreaker to Southridge in the provincial final. The 6-foot-9 post was named MVP of the Lower Mainland Tournament and was a First Team All-Star at the B.C. Championships — highlighted by a monster 40-point and 32-rebound performance in the title game.
He also helped B.C. win gold at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.
In 2015,Canada’s U17 team won a silver medal at the U16 FIBA Americas Championships - the program’s best-ever finish. Canada is currently ranked third in the worldwide in the FIBA youth men rankings.
