Richmond golf standout Diego San Pedro will be continuing his career at Oregon State University next fall.

The Grade 12 student at Steveston-London secondary will join Hawaii’s Kyosuke Hara and Shawn Lu as part of the Beavers’ 2016 recruiting class.

San Pedro is ranked number one among junior players in B.C., according to Junior Golf Scoreboard. He has represented B.C. at the past two Junior Americas Cup, including the 2014 tournament at the Shaugnessy Golf Club, his home course.

“One question I’m often asked is, ‘What do I look for in recruits?’” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “A key factor, or maybe predictor of success at the college level, is how they finish in junior events on what I know to be a difficult course. “Shaugnessy is a tremendously difficult course, which has played host to the PGA TOUR’s Canadian Open. At the beginning of next year, 10 of the top 20 players in that event will be on a Pac-12 roster.

“As freshmen, these three young men will add great depth to a team next fall returning almost everyone. But I know they aren’t looking to add just depth. They expect to help us compete at a high level immediately and I wouldn’t be surprised to find all three of them in our starting lineup in the same event at some point next year.”

San Pedro captured the B.C. Juvenile Championship in 2014 and was seventh at the B.C. Junior Boys Championships and the CN Pacific Future Links a year later.

“Diego is the kind of person you meet and want to spend more time with. When talking with people about Diego during the recruiting process, it was easy to recognize just how much people truly like him. As a golfer, Diego has a very strong overall game,” added Reehoorn.
