Richmond athlete wins gold again in B.C. junior pentathlon

The Kajaks Track and Field athlete outperformed 14 competitors to clinch her third straight win.

A Richmond athlete scored the top spot for the third year ina row in a provincial pentathlon competition.

Seylah Bains, 11, who trains with the Richmond-based Kajaks Track and Field Club, brought home gold from the 2025 BC Junior Development Pentathlon Championships that took place on June 14 in Maple Ridge.

Seylah competed against 14 other young female athletes in long jump, 60-metre hurdles, high jump, shot put and the 600-metre run and scored a total of 2,184 points.

She secured her win more than 300 points ahead of second-place Esme Verkaik of the Langley Mustangs.

"It was a great feeling, and it was just a really special moment, and I couldn't believe that I did it three years in a row," Seylah told the Richmond News.

This year was one of the hardest competitions she has taken part in, she said.

"I had to work extremely hard to succeed in all of the events," said Seylah, adding the thought of keeping the winning title for three consecutive years weighed heavily on her mind.

Seylah said she owes her win to her coaches, parents and grandfather who cheered her on for the entire pentathlon.

"They all mean so much to me, and I really appreciate their support."
