Richmond speed skater wins gold at provincial championships

Skaters head to the season finale in February.

Richmond Rockets Women's team won big at the B.C. Long Track Speed Skating Championships this weekend.

Speed skater Alice Guo brought home gold at the competition that was held in Fort St. John.

Guo is competing in her first full year of speed skating and is also a medalist in the B.C. Short Track Championships.

Richmond Rockets skater Alivia Lam, who won silver, and Carly Bastien, who came in fifth place, also returned home with achievements from the competition.

Lam is also a medalist in the short-track championships and is a skater with the Richmond Oval High Performance Program.

"Their accomplishments are even more impressive in light of the fact that all three are short track specialists," said Alexander Teh, president of the Richmond Rockets Speed Skating Club.

"While short-track and long-track are two separate disciplines, utilizing different techniques and separate, highly specialized equipment, it didn’t seem to matter to the Richmond skaters."

Guo, Lam and Bastien will be part of Team BC as they compete in the Canadian National Speed Skating Championships in Quebec City from Feb. 9 to 11.

All three skaters will also be heading to the season finale at the Richmond Rockets Oval Challenge, one of the largest interclub competitions, on Feb. 17.
