Several skaters from the Richmond Connaught Skating Club won gold medals, including an eight-year-old girl, at last week’s Edmonton skating competition.

Alexa Riddoch took home first place in the juvenile ladies category at the Wild Rose Summer Competition held in Alberta from Aug. 4 to 7.

The R.C. Talmey student said winning the gold medal was an exciting moment for her.

“I felt really happy because I did a great skate. It just felt really good to win gold,” said Alexa.

“I think it went really well as it was my first time at this competition.”

The competition, hosted by Skate Canada Alberta Section, saw the best skaters from Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba compete on the ice including 65 Richmond athletes.

Alexa told the Richmond News spending time with her teammates was an added bonus.

“I loved the opportunity to travel with my teammates and represent my club from different provinces,” she said.

“I loved showcasing my skills and competing against different peers.”

Alexa’s goal for the rest of the season is to prepare and aim for the pre-novice level competitions next year.

The Richmond athletes returned home with 23 medals from the Wild Rose competition alongside 32 personal best scores, Keegan Murphy, director and coach at Connaught Skating Club, told the News.
