Richmond skating club sweeps 42 medals at provincials

More than 150 athletes from the club represented Richmond at the competition.

Richmond’s Connaught Skating Club took home more than 40 medals during the provincial competition last week.

The club had 157 athletes representing Richmond at the provincials held in Surrey during Victoria Day long weekend.

Skater Jaslynn Wong, who won gold in the juvenile U10 category, said she felt good and was “relieved once the performance was over.”

“I am really happy to represent this club and step (on) to the gold medal podium spot,” said Wong.

“At my next competition, I want to feel more confident and maybe land my double axel.”

Meanwhile, Hunter Wong who competed in the star 4 boys category, was proud to receive his first medal at a competition.

“It was a great surprise to reach a podium placement,” he said.

Keegan Murphy, director at Connaught Skating Club, told the Richmond News that coaches, skaters and parents worked together to make sure everyone was prepared and enjoyed the competition.

He added that there is a lot more to look forward to in the coming months.

“The coaching team is so proud of the huge improvement each skater showed since their last performance opportunity,” said Murphy.

“We know look to prepare the athletes for an exciting summer season with competitions in Burnaby, Edmonton, Ottawa, Los Angeles and Boston as well as hosting our own performance opportunities here in Richmond.”
