Connaught skater David Li snatched the gold medal in Italy’s figure skating competition earlier this month.

Li, 15, competed in the men’s novice event at the Egna Spring Trophy Figure Skating Competition and scored a total score of 126.82 points in the free skate short program.

The McGee secondary student said he was pretty happy with his performance.

“I felt pretty confident in my routine and I performed well,” said Li.

“I wasn’t used to travelling outside Canada for competitions, but it was a great experience."

Li told the Richmond News that he has been skating since he was 10 years old and enjoys the feeling of performing for others on the ice.

“I will be working on some new jumps for training since I will be moving up a level.”

Keegan Murphy, director of skating programs at Connaught Skating Club, describes Li as one of the “hardest working athletes” the club has seen in Richmond.

“The international judges recognized his special qualities and rewarded him accordingly,” said Murphy.

“The entire Connaught Skating Club could not be more proud of him.  He is very deserving."
