Richmond skater Leah Lee has snagged herself a spot for the upcoming 2022 Canadian Tire National Championships.

The 16-year-old competed against 37 girls in the senior’s lady event at the Skate Canada Challenge, which took place in Regina last week.

“I felt kind of relieved and happy because ultimately qualifying for (the national championships) was my main goal for the competition,” said Lee.

While Lee said she was “happy and confident” with her short program at the qualifiers, she was apprehensive after her second, long skate program “didn’t go as planned.”

“I was a bit nervous after I finished the second program because I wasn’t sure if it would give me a spot at the qualifiers, so when the scores came out I was relieved.”

The Richmond Connaught skater finished second place in her short program and placed 12th overall in her category.

The Canadian championships will take place in Ottawa from Jan. 5 to 15 and Lee said she and her coach have started planning out the weeks leading up to the competition.

She added that they are training with safety in mind to “avoid any injuries and keeping everything in shape.”
