A 15-year-old Richmond figure skater will be representing Canada at an international event in France this month.

Connaught Skating Club's David Li is participating in the 2022 ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Courchevel, France which is running from Aug. 24 to 27.

This event will feature singles discipline (men and women) in the junior categories.

According to Connaught coach Keegan Murphy, Li will be competing with some of the top skaters ages 17 or 18 years old at the event.

"(Li) is very young to just go and maybe aim for the top 10 and get used to competing against guys that are older," says Murphy.

He adds that Li's gold medal win at the 2022 Egna Spring Trophy event in April jump started his international reputation.

"In the last couple of months, he's continued to show significant improvement, though all of these factors have led to him being named to represent Canada in this competition."

Despite Li's first time competing in an international junior event, he says he is excited to showcase what he has been practicing.

"I'm excited to show what I've been training and learning through the couple of months of training and what I've achieved this year," says Li.

"I feel really proud of myself, its like a big goal has been achieved."

He added that he plans to compete like how he trains and will taking things "one step at a time" in preparation for the international event.
