Richmond figure skater, 14, spins his way to Italy

The event in Italy next week will be an international first for Connaught's David Li

A 14-year-old Richmond figure skater is preparing to represent Canada at a prestigious international event for the first time in Italy next week.

Connaught Skating Club’s David Li is packing his bags for 2022 Egna Spring Trophy in Egna, Italy, which runs from April 7 to 10.

The event will feature the singles discipline (men and women) in the novice, junior and senior categories.

According to one of David’s coaches, Keegan Murphy, the Richmond skater was chosen by Skate Canada due to his “demonstration of advanced triple jumps,” adding that his spinning ability has “allowed him to surpass many of his competitors who are two and three years older than him.”

“It means a lot because I have always wanted to compete internationally and to be able to get chosen to go to Italy means a lot to me,” said David about getting chosen.

He added that the competition will help him “gain the experience and the confidence towards the next competitions and the future."

David’s other coach, Eileen Murphy, said the 14-year-old’s success has come from a “daily process to keep the technique precise and the quality of elements as high as possible in order to be selected for international representation.

“The federation has been watching David develop in Richmond for many years.  We are so proud of him for showing Canada what a special athlete he is."
