A former Richmond student is lighting it up on the hills on the American college skiing circuit.

Dawson Yates, an alumnus of Westwind elementary and Steveston-London secondary, logged his second top 10 finish of the season recently with the Montana State University (MSU) Bobcats team in his freshman year.

Yates, along with teammates Louis Mühlen-Schulte and Åge Solheim, all recorded top 10 finishes at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Invitational at Westminster to pace Montana State in slalom on Tuesday afternoon at Snowbird Ski Resort.

"Dawson Yates continues to impress with his slalom skiing," said head coach Kevin Francis.

"He is very constant, and he is building on good results and good starts.

“Overall, everyone improved each run. We were in a great position to improve upon our first race results, after the first run of the second race, but bad holes and bad luck caught all Bobcats."

After the alpine events, Utah sits atop the team standing with 350 points, followed by Westminster 300.5, Colorado 283, MSU 265, Denver 261.5, Alaska Anchorage 198, Colorado Mountain 128.
