McMath’s Camryn Rogers proved to be one of the stars at last weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Nanaimo.
The Grade 11 student and Richmond Kajaks member shattered the meet record in the hammer throw with a toss of 59.15 metres — eclipsing the 13-year-old mark (55.09) set by Seaquam Secondary’s Catrina Chisholm.
Rogers also captured the senior girls shot-put event with a throw of 13.3 metres — becoming just the third athlete in 45 years to get over the 13-metre barrier since the meet record (13.92) was established back in 1971.
For her efforts, Rogers shared the meet’s Top Female Athlete Award with St. Thomas More sprinter Corrales Nelson who won the 100, 200 and 400 metre events.
Rogers headed to the Island with plenty of momentum after establishing a new national junior and youth record in the hammer throw (59.73 metres) at the recent Richard Collier Throw Fest — hosted by the Kajaks.
It puts Rogers in position to represent Canada at this summer’s World Junior Track and Field Championships in Poland. She works with Kajaks head and throws coach Garrett Collier.
Rogers wasn’t the only Richmond athlete to reach the provincial podium at the senior level. Steveston-London’s Valerie Wideski finished second in the girls discus event with a toss of 39.84 metres. Wideski was also fourth in the shot put(11.32 metres).
McNair’s Georgia Lam almost joined them, settling for fourth in the 100 and 200 metre events. McMath’s Sara Cathcart was also fourth in the high jump (1.55 metres).
Junior highlights included Burnett’s Eric Che captured the long jump event with a leap of 6.60 metres. Steveston-London’s Merveilles Amisi was also a gold medal winner in the junior boys high jump thanks to clearing 1.90 metres.
McMath also captured the junior boys 4x100 relay with a winning clock of 45.07 seconds.
