Coronavirus concerns led to the postponement of the 2020 CARHA World Cup in Richmond. The tournament was bringing 3,000 athletes to the city from 15 countries. Organizers are working on new dates in 2021.

An international adult hockey tournament to be hosted in Richmond – slated for last March, then postponed until 2021 – has been put on hold until 2022.

Organizers of the CARHA Hockey World Cup say the ongoing pandemic means the event simply can’t be planned for until March 27 to April 3 in 2022.

The tournament was set to feature nearly 3,000 athletes representing 140 teams from 15 countries.

A statement from tournament organizers read, “With so much uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of COVID-19 both in Canada as well as internationally, a decision has been made to protect our players, partners, staff, volunteers, guests and the Richmond community.

“Although this decision was a difficult one, it is best for everyone as the health and safety of those who are involved is of the utmost importance.”

Although disappointed, Mayor Malcolm Brodie said the city “looks forward to hosting this world-class event and welcoming the many athletes, visitors and spectators to our wonderful city in 2022."
