One of the greatest volleyball players ever to come out of Richmond is now working in her hometown as part of the Volleyball Centre of Excellence coaching staff based out of the Olympic Oval.
Carla Bradstock will be assisting head coach Joanne Ross for the 2013-14 program. The Cambie secondary graduate earned Most Valuable Player honours back in 2002 when the Eric Enns-coached Crusaders won the provincial title on home court over Langley's DW Poppy. The triumph marks the last time a Richmond girls team has won a B.C. high school volleyball championship.
Bradstock went on to enjoy an outstanding university career with the UBC Thunderbirds - again being recognized as MVP in 2008 when her team won the CIS national championship. She was also named Canada West Player of the Year. Bradstock played for the national team program and professionally around the world for Sollentuna Volleyball Club (Sollentuna, Sweden), ASKO Linz Steg Volleyball Club (Linz, Austria), and Shirvan (Baku, Azerbaijan). She is also a former Miss Universe Canada contestant.
"I am greatly looking forward to working with the High Performance program at the Olympic Oval," said Bradstock. "And contributing to the future successes of all athletes involved in the program."
Also joining the Centre of Excellence Staff is Alex Tyzuk.
After playing several years for Team BC and winning several top awards at the Western Elite Championships. As a setter, Tyzuk spent three seasons with UBC. During this time he sustained a shoulder injury that ended his indoor volleyball career, but he threw himself into coaching and mentoring with several local clubs, including: Thunder Volleyball Club, Thunder Beach, UBC Atomic Programs, UBC Skills Clinics and the Team BC Volleyball.
"I'm very excited to be able to work with the athletes and the Centre of Excellence this year and help them grow, develop and prepare for the next step in their respective volleyball careers," said Tyzuk.
The Oval Volleyball Centre of Excellence is a leader in superior coaching, technical leadership and competition hosting that will guide athletes and coaches from community grassroots participation to high performance opportunities with Volleyball BC and Volleyball Canada.
