Richmond’s Hanna Finkelstein is among 32 athletes who have been named to Softball Canada’s 2017 Junior Women’s National Team Athlete Pool.
The athlete pool was selected by the women’s national team coaching staff following three regional identification camps held this summer and scouting at several major tournaments including the U16 and U18 Canadian Championships.
Back in August, Finkelstein helped the powerhouse White Rock ’99 Renegades reach the U18 national final in Charlottetown, PEI before dropping a 4-3 decision to the ’98 Renegades in an all-B.C. final.
The ’99 team captured the U16 Canadian title a year earlier and is already favoured for the 2017 nationals.
Finkelstein, a Grade 12 student at Hugh Boyd secondary, saw regular duties at pitcher as well as third base for the Renegades.
And she was namedTournament MVP at the 2015 U16 Nationals.
The honour roll student is also a multiple winner of Hugh Boyd’s Athlete of the Year Award.
All athletes from the pool will attend a selection camp next June in Cloverdale.
From this camp, the coaching staff will select a team to represent Canada at the 2017 WBSC Junior Women’s World Softball Championship. That event is scheduled for July 24-30 in Clearwater, Florida.
