Former Hugh Boyd Trojans football standout Tiernan Docherty has signed with the B.C. Lions.
The talented place kicker and punter joined the Lions at their training camp in Kamloops on Thursday. He wrapped up his university career at Simon Fraser last fall.
“It feels great to get this opportunity, being a Lions fan my whole life,” said Docherty. “I’m excited to get a chance to show what I can do.”
Last season with the Clan, Docherty connecting on seven of 14 on field goals, including a 48-yarder. He was four of five inside the 30 yard-line. Docherty split the punting duties with Nikolai Karpun, averaging 39 yards on 26 punts. His longest was 53 yards.
“I have a lot of learning to do and this is the first step to get where I need to be,” said Docherty, who was assigned jersey No. 17.
The Lions have two international kickers in camp, Ritchie Leone from Houston and Anthony Fera out of Texas Tech. Both are in their second seasons. The Lions open their pre-season schedule 11 in Saskatchewan before hosting Calgary June 17 at B.C. Place Stadium.
