One of Richmonds search and rescue vessels was the target of vandals last weekend.
The incident could have put lives at risk, according to the local Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSR).
Its vessel, the B.R. Hastings, was deliberately set adrift on Saturday night from its moorings on the middle arm of the Fraser River. Members of the volunteer search and rescue station were notified in the evening that their vessel was adrift in the middle arm.
Fortunately, it had become stuck in the current against the nearby Richmond Yacht Club.
After an inspection, it was determined that the $300,000 vessel was not damaged any further and is able to remain in active service.
Particularly concerning was the fact that the vessel had been purposely detached from its home dock in the middle arm, said the stations Brian Hobbs.
One of the lines had been removed from its post, which was not something that could happen accidentally.
The B.R. Hastings is secured in a locked facility (on the river) that is leased from the City of Richmond.
Already this year, the stations volunteers have contributed 237 person hours to search and rescue missions around Richmonds waterways.
The Richmond RCMP is investigating the mischief.
As Richmond s only volunteer emergency service, the station is currently recruiting volunteers. Contact [email protected] or 604-227-9909 for further information.
