Richmond Fire-Rescue praised a “civilian” who quickly set to work extinguishing a fire in a parkade on Friday.
The fire in a planter on the fourth floor of the Granville Avenue and Minoru Boulevard parkade resulted in a dramatic scene captured on video. But in the end, the fire was extinguished by the civilian using a garden hose and Richmond Fire-Rescue.
Four to five cedar trees in the planter were affected by the fire, explained Trevor Northrup, deputy assistant chief with Richmond Fire-Rescue, but it could have spread to several more.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and it’s under investigation.
But Northrup said it’s a good time to remind people to extinguish cigarettes properly. Furthermore, with the weather being “hotter, dryer, faster,” he reminded people to be cautious when barbecuing.
Nobody was hurt in the parkade fire.
