Students thankful after Canada Line station clothing drive in Richmond

A Richmond Secondary School alumnus and her friends collected at least six bags of winter clothes in Richmond this afternoon.

This winter is going to be a bit warmer for some, thanks to Sarah Lin, a Richmond Secondary alumnus, and her friends.

Lin, who moved from Richmond to Vancouver two years ago, set up a temporary stand at Richmond-Brighouse Canada Line station on Tuesday to collect dozens of blankets, winter clothes and scarves. Later, they will donate them to a homeless shelter in Vancouver.

“It’s important for everyone to know that we should be helping people during the holiday time, not just buying gifts for ourselves. A gift that can make us truly happy is to support people in need,” said Lin.

The idea of collecting winter clothes was initiated by Lin’s classmates months ago, when they decided to use their winter break to do something meaningful for the community, noted Lin.

“We feel that we have built deep connections with others and better understand how the world works through initiating events like this. We also feel it’s a great way to develop empathy, which is important for people my age,” said Lin.

She added that they are all encouraged by the community’s support, and they have collected at least six bags of winter clothes after spending three hours at the station.
