An Indigenous Richmond man has been recognized this B.C. Day with a Medal of Good Citizenship for rebuilding Lytton and honouring Indigenous survivors.
Troy MacBeth Abromaitis (Lex7em’ken Drynock), who is a sixties scoop survivor and a member of the Lytton First Nation, returned to Lytton after the devastating fires of 2021 to help rebuild.
With more than two decades of real estate and development experience, he has led housing projects, raised significant funds and championed a culturally rooted recovery.
“His efforts have united Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners in restoring both infrastructure and community spirit,” reads a statement from the province announcing the recipients of the Medal of Good Citizenship.
Abromaitis is one of 18 recipients being honoured with the medal this B.C. Day.
The medal is given to people who have “acted in a generous, kind or selfless manner for the betterment of their communities, without expectation of reward.”
Abromaitis founded Indigenous Survivors Day and National Blanket Ceremony Day, now officially recognized in B.C. and beyond.
As treasurer of the National Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation, Abromaitis oversees a $50-million fund supporting culturally grounded healing initiatives.
The Medal of Good Citizenship was established in 2015 and it’s the second highest honour in the province.
“Today marks a decade of celebrating exceptional people who do remarkable things out of the goodness of their hearts,” said Premier David Eby in a statement.
“This year’s honourees exemplify what it means to be a good citizen by selflessly stepping up to help their fellow British Columbians with kindness, compassion and commitment. Thank you to all the Medal of Good Citizenship recipients for inspiring everyone around you.”
