Steveston Icebreaker makes its delayed return to action

The popular road race was due to make its comeback in January until the surge of COVID-19

It was more of a pause than a false start for the return of the popular Steveston Icebreaker 8K run.

Richmond’s only road race – along Steveston’s famous waterfront – was due to make its comeback in its usual January spot, after taking a year off in 2021 due to the pandemic.

But the COVID-19 Omicron variant surge at the start of the year caused yet another postponement.

However, it’s all-systems go for this weekend, Sunday, April 10, at 9 a.m., including the New Balance 1K Kidsrun which goes half an hour earlier.

The race is also one of the major fundraisers for its organizers, the Kajaks Track and Field Club.

Kids run sold out, online adult registration still available

The kids run is already sold out and the Icebreaker is apparently at record attendance, with more than 600 runners registered and counting.

Olympic bronze medalist Evan Dunfee will be walking for KidSport Richmond in the kids run and taking photos with his medal in the Kids Zone after the race.

Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on April 6 but you can still register in person at New Balance Richmond during the package pick-up period from April 7-9.

All Icebreaker and kids run participants will receive a $25 gift card for NB Richmond, exclusive Icebreaker deals and there will be tons of other swag and goodies for the runners.

Organizers are expecting their first-ever sellout.
