Steveston barber cuts a classic

Iain Mackelworth took his staff to a Downtown Vancouver event just to have a look at the competition...but came back with a medal and a trophy

He thought he’d go downtown, just to check it out, and he came back with a trophy and a medal tucked under his arm.

Steveston Barbers' Iain Mackelworth entered the Battle of the Barbers competition, run by the prestigious London School of Barbers at a Downtown Vancouver club in aid of charity.

“I’ve never done this before, so I decided to go down and have a look,” said Mackelworth.

“There are barber shops popping up all over the place right now, so I thought it would be good to get down there and find out where we stand.”

Turns out, Mackelworth and fellow Steveston Barbers contestant Ryan Lewis stood up pretty well against the 50 or so barbers — the pair tied for first place in the Men’s Classic category.

“It was a brilliant result for the shop, it really was,” said Mackelworth, who also entered the Freestyle category with, what he called, a “banging” flat-top design.

“It’s quite an interesting time all round for barber shops to be honest. It’s all gone a bit old school again and a bit edgy.”

Steveston Barbers' Gerard Provost also entered the competition’s Best Fade category.
